SLIDELL?– Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith, who was elected as the sheriff of St. Tammany Parish in November of 2015, has selected long time Slidell Police veteran, Eugene “Butch” Howard, to serve as interim police chief.
Although the election was decided back in November of last year, Smith does not officially take over as sheriff until July 1st. Starting on Monday, May 2nd, Howard will work closely with Chief Smith until Smith officially hands off the reigns at the end of June. A permanent replacement for Slidell Police chief will be selected during a special election in November of this year.
Howard, who is a Slidell resident and a highly decorated officer, served in the Army from 1970-1975. After leaving the Army in 1975, Howard began his career with the Slidell Police Department. During his tenure, he served as Chief of Operations, S.W.A.T. Commander, Patrol Commander, Assistant Chief of Detectives, and ultimately served as the Assistant Chief of Police until he retired in 2007.
Howard has received numerous commendations, Exceptional Service awards, and graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy in 1998. Although retired, Howard continues his dedication to the department by serving as a reserve officer.
Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith says, “I have full confidence in Howard to lead the Slidell Police Department. He is no stranger to law enforcement, and we will be working closely to ensure a smooth transition.”
