Vote ‘No’ on Saturday
“Quality of life” is a frequent, if not at times, overused phrase when talking about life in St. Tammany Parish.
However, when it comes to the vote facing parish residents this Saturday, Dec. 11, it is not an overstatement to say the quality of life as we know it today is very much at stake.
St. Tammany Parish has been one of the most sought after places to live in Louisiana for nearly two decades. And it’s no wonder why.
Beautiful scenery with fresh air to breath, outstanding law enforcement, very low crime, top private and public schools, and communities where neighbors care about neighbors in a sincere way.
Casinos?
They have never been a part of the North Shore, and residents in 1996 stated unequivocally with a 62 percent vote that we don’t want them here.
Not that gambling is a terrible thing that no one should enjoy. For many it is a form of entertainment, not to mention the night life and concerts that can be found on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. That scene is something that one or two casinos here will never create.
So do we need them here now?
We say “No,” and it is because we should not gamble with losing the incredible lifestyle and yes, quality of life, that so many have worked so hard for years to create.
If that is important to you, then you better get out of your house Saturday and make a point to vote. The pro casino voices are loud and focused, and while there has clearly been a strong movement against the proposed casino, it will all come down to who gets their side out on Saturday.
We are doing quite well in St. Tammany Parish without casinos, and now we urge parish residents to fight to keep things the way they are. And if you believe this vote for the first casino in the parish will be the last, then you better think twice. One casino for the parish will unquestionably open the door for a second vote, and then who knows how many might come after that.
Casinos are not a magic potion that will cure all the financial issues facing the parish. If anything, they could create more problems than the parish currently faces, so why would we gamble on something that offers very little upside?
That is why we are urging you to make sure to vote Saturday, and vote “No” in this incredibly important decision facing St. Tammany Parish.
