LAURA MAE MCGOON O’STEEN

Laura Mae McGoon O’Steen, age 93, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 in Slidell. Laura was born in Miami, Florida, on August 9, 1928 to Douglas Osborne McGoon and Mary Chapel McGoon. She attended high school in Miami Springs, Florida and graduated in 1946. She kept up correspondence over many years with fellow Miami High classmates via the Stingaree Newsletter.
Laura went on to earn a degree in interior design from the University of Florida, where she entered original artwork in competitions and contributed designs to the school’s Seminole yearbook. She served in student government and was a member of Phi Mu sorority, earning membership in Phi Kappa Phi and graduating magna cum laude in 1950.
Laura was married to Harry Robert O’Steen from 1950 until his death in 1997. She worked as an interior decorator, illustrator, and artist until the birth of her children. Later in life she enjoyed all the casinos had to offer, cooking, and feeding and identifying the variety of bird species through the seasons in her garden.
Laura Mae is survived by her three daughters, Mary Lucille O’Steen Doerner of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Diane O’Steen Harrelson (spouse, Clay) of Gulf Breeze, Florida, and Patricia Clair O’Steen Robertson of Alpharetta, Georgia. Laura’s grandchildren include Christopher Robert Doerner (spouse, Holly) of Garner, North Carolina, Julie Doerner Watson (spouse, Tyler) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Laura Marie Harrelson of New Orleans, David Harrelson of Gulf Breeze, Florida, and Andrew Beaux Robertson of Alpharetta, Georgia. Her great-grandchildren include Amelia Frances Watson and Avery Grace Watson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Cameron Crowe, Colin Crowe, Stephen Cole Doerner, and Heidi Katherine Doerner of Garner, North Carolina.
Memorial donations may be made to the National Audubon Society.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to her caregivers, Alfred Evans and Brenda Carter for all the love and attention they gave our mother.

David Odie Brown, age 70, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022.
A native of Malaga, OH, he was a graduate of Beallsville High School where he played football, basketball and competed in track.
He owned his own drywall company in Louisiana for many years and enjoyed working in his yard, fishing and doing home improvements.

Phillip “Phil” Anthony Arcement, age 78, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Friday, January 21, 2022.
Born in Houma, he lived most of his life in Port Sulfur and attended LSU where he was part of the Marching Band and choir.
He worked as a chief operator at Tennessee Gas for 30 years and in his spare time enjoyed playing golf, cheering for the Saints and listening to music.

Joan “Joanie” Perret Lepine, age 81, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2022.
Born in New Orleans, she graduated from Academy of Holy Angels in 1958, then working for the U.S. government for many years before retirement.
She was a devout Catholic who was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Monica Gates, age 73, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.
Born in New Orleans, she was raised in the Irish Channel and graduated from Southeastern with a degree in Medical Technology. She worked at Slidell Memorial Hospital early in her career, went to Children’s Hospital, and then returned to SMH where she became the lab manager before earning her Master’s Degree from Tulane in Public Health that led to becoming CEO at Slidell Memorial.
She retired after three years and began a career in real estate, while she was also a member of the Slidell Women’s Civic Club.

Toni Luise Kepleer, age 87, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022.
She attended the World’s Fair in Seattle in 1962 and met her husband there, leading to 59 years together.
She loved birds and all animals, and had a talent for gardening, besides her hobbies of watching old black and white movies, and listening to music.

David Keith “Chip” Broome, age 46, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Monday, January 24, 2022.
He loved to travel and share his experiences, and was known as always being “on the move” to create a feast of a meal for all, or building and making art.

Joshua Charles Picou, age 26, of Pearl River, LA, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.
A native of Slidell, he graduated from Pearl River High in 2014 and loved spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

Dr. Charles Anthony Cefalu Sr., age 70, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2022.
A native of New Orleans, he loved LSU, his patients and the elderly, whom he focused his attention on in his practice to help them in a way “most wouldn’t understand.”
