SLIDELL — The cross town soccer rivalry is still alive.
As usual, records mean nothing in this matchup against Northshore and Slidell. Combine that with it being senior night for Slidell, and there was destined to be excitement in the air.
The Northshore team entered the game seeded seventh in the state and wanting to make a statement prior to the end of the regular season.
The match began with a high level of energy in the cold Friday night. Both teams were quick to the ball and each pass contested. As rivalry games go, this one displayed good defense and tight marking by defenders. As the game continued, Northshore’s offensive superiority eventually took over. Dario Cutura found the net twice as Northshore sealed the victory 2-0.
“Compared to the game we played earlier in the year, I thought Slidell had much more to fight than the last match. Between senior night, it being a home game for Slidell and one win away from the playoffs, they were much more focused and ready for this match,” said Northshore head soccer coach Ryan Lazaroe. “I thought we created some quality chances but couldn’t convert. What we need to focus on the most is finishing our chances. The team progress has been great throughout the year; especially the second half of the season.
“The quality wins vs. St. Paul, Fountainbleau and Mandeville have given us extra confidence needed going into the playoffs.”
