It wasn’t pretty in the early going as the Lakeshore Lady Titans met the Pearl River Lady Rebels.
Despite a multitude of missed shots and a huge number of turnovers, the Lady Rebels pulled out a 41-36 District 8-4A win over Lakeshore.
The first period ended in single digits as Pearl River could only muster five points to Lakeshore’s eight.
Julia Dean had four points for the Lady Titans while Savannah Walker hit a trey for the Lady Rebels.
Pearl River grabbed their first lead of the game in the second period going up 11-10 on the strength of two three-pointers by Walker and Tabitha Undenhagan.
Lakeshore tied it at 14-14 but the Lady Rebels went on a 5-0 run to take a 19-14 lead into halftime.
The story of the night was the inability of Lakeshore in the rebounding department.
Pearl River had numerous second and third chances in their offensive end pulling down a number of rebounds.
“We’ve been emphasizing our rebounding all season,” said Pearl River Coach Amanda Arcement. “Our girls continue to improve and have done a great job in the last few games. We are a young team with only one senior and we seem to get better in each game.”
The third period tightened up as Lakeshore made a run to pull within one at 28-27.
But that would be a close as the Lady Titans would get as Pearl River hit some big free throws down the stretch for the 41-36 win.
“We did a much better job on defense tonight,” said Lakeshore Coach Jennifer Hebert. “We had some great shots from underneath but they just wouldn’t drop and that really hurt us. Our goal has been to try and get better with each game and to not worry about our record.”
Neither team shot well on the night as Pearl River hit on 14-of-48 shots (29 percent) while Lakeshore hit only 15-of-57 (26 percent) from the field.
Dean led all scorers with 16 points as Raquel Davis and Deja’ Lewis each had seven for the Lady Titans.
Pearl River’s Katelyn Mumphrey led the Lady Rebels with 11 while Walker had eight and Sierra St. Pierre had seven.
Pearl River’s next game has yet to be determined due to rescheduling.
