There is certainly a lot of negative news we hear from the national front these days with runaway inflation, gas prices heading up again, thousands of people coming into our country unvetted at the southern border, and the war in Ukraine that some are concerned about turning into World War III.
With that said, it was still an extremely refreshing and encouraging day for those who attended the 11th annual Mayor’s Community Prayer Breakfast in Slidell last week.
In the midst of turmoil affecting Americans all around, several hundred people gathered in the Slidell Municipal Auditorium and were united in one thing—trusting that God is still in control, and we can find peace in knowing that, no matter how much the world is shaking around us.
There were men and women of all faiths, races and age who attended, once again proving that in Slidell and St. Tammany Parish we can look to our spiritual leaders for bringing us together before God, no matter our color or denomination.
There was also a large contingent of high school teens who took part to provide and serve breakfast, and then clearly paid attention to a young man who gave his testimony, followed by a song that moved many in the room to tears.
The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast was started by former Mayor Freddy Drennan, who delighted many that day by attending again, even though he is enjoying life in retirement now.
The theme in the breakfast from the early years was to have different parish mayor’s read actual quotes that came from speeches given by some of the early presidents of the United States. To see the words up on the screen it is absolutely apparent that the founders of this country were positively Christian and intended for this country to be founded on those principles from the Bible.
Regardless of what faith you may be, or even if you are an atheist, the wisdom from the Bible can only be described as a good thing.
The lessons, instruction and guidance from the Bible is for men and women to lead righteous, honest lives, and be a person who follows the Scripture in the Book of Mark that says to “love your neighbor as yourself.” In other words, our life should be about appreciating the many blessings we have been given, and then use those blessings to help others.
Who can find fault with that kind of teaching? It is about being good to your fellow man and helping out in any way you can for any person where you see a need.
The more we focus on those words of instruction, the more our world would be a better place.
And for that morning in the city of Slidell it was encouraging to see so many come together in agreement with those ideals.
