What will it take to get people to go vote?
That continues to be the question of the day when elections appear on the horizon, as is happening very soon on Oct. 14, along with early voting that is set from Sept. 30 to Oct. 7.
Voting turnout has gotten worse and worse for years, probably even recent decades, and public officials continue to seek ways to change the trend with little success.
It is a terrible thing to see that so many Americans do not think it is important enough to take such a small bit of their spare time to go vote.
St. Tammany Parish is no different than most areas of the country. Recent years have seen important elections decided with as little as 15 percent of the population going to the polls and making critical decisions.
Some elections that have millage renewals or tax votes have seen as little as 10 percent of the parish residents turn out.
What has happened to us? Why are so many Americans deciding it is not even worth a half hour to drive to the polls and vote? People in other countries must laugh at Americans who do not think democracy is important enough to have a vote. So many believe the wonderful freedom we have in this country will always be here, no matter who gets voted into office.
But if you wonder how much things can change by different people winning elections, look at one key issue in the United States from the time Donald Trump was president to Joe Biden winning.
When Trump was president, he made the U.S. energy independent in a matter of four years. It had never been that way here before and might have been one of the greatest achievements for the citizens of this country when you consider how much worldwide power comes for a country that does not rely on others for all its energy. Gas prices went below $2 a gallon right here in Slidell.
As soon as Biden took office, he did everything possible to turn off the oil and gas production, something he has been quite successful at, and the result has been soaring energy prices, skyrocketing inflation since energy sources affect everything, and the promise that we will all soon be forced to buy electric cars.
You don’t have to be a far-left environmentalist to support clean energy or other means of creating energy, but the idea of shutting down the vast amount of oil and gas production before any other energy forms are close to really working is downright foolish.
But it shows what happens when the vote goes one way or the other, and that’s why it would be refreshing to see adults actually realize how important it is to vote.
The coming Parish Council elections have gotten more attention than ever, because it is one of the few ways, we can halt the far-left liberals from allowing our children to read pornography and sexually explicit books in our public libraries. But maybe parents don’t think that matters either. We will certainly find out how important that issue is to parents when we see what happens in the Oct. 14 election.
But then, maybe nobody cares about that either.
