Do you believe there is a God?
A Gallup poll stated that 81 percent of Americans do believe in God. And if you believe in God, then you must also know there is evil in this world as well.
It’s not hard to see evil at work in many forms, but there could be no greater example of that then the horrible hate and evil seen in the recent attacks by Hamas on Israel in the Middle East. Thousands have died and when you hear about babies having their heads cut off, evil could not be seen in a clearer light.
We hear about evil in our country as well. People who hurt others in terrible ways, especially when it comes to attacks on women and children.
Unfortunately, evil is all around us and for those who want to somehow reject the idea of real evil being a part of this world, the Middle East attacks could not have confirmed the reality of it any more convincingly.
Evil comes in many forms, and some of it may not immediately strike you as such.
Even in our own community, we see evil in the way some adults are trying to hurt our children—even in our own public libraries. Anything that attempts to hurt children can only be described as evil, and the attacks on children in today’s world, through social media in particular, is something parents need to be much more vigilant to stop.
Many of us in America have become so comfortable with our great lifestyle here, but we cannot sit back and hope it just goes away. It has even crept into our federal government with one group of people doing anything they can to hurt others. What has happened to respect and decency for others, even when we have completely different beliefs and values?
Evil is evil at whatever level we see it, but too many of us are unwilling to take a stand, knowing there could be a price to pay.
However, as Irish statesman Edmund Burke said so many years ago, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”
When will we as Americans, particularly men, begin to stand up and call evil what it is? Even in the current St. Tammany fight to rid pornography and sexually explicit materials from easy access by our children the number of people who have turned out to fight this battle is incredibly small. It is shameful when children are being exposed to materials that could ruin their lives.
The more we allow evil to creep into our society the more it will try to take. The idea that the U.S. couldn’t face a terrible attack as occurred in Israel is something we must know is not true. Just remember 9/11.
We must pray for good to triumph, and we must do more than that, to be willing to take a stand at whatever the cost if we want to protect our community and our families.
