It was a banner night at the Salmen gym.
The Lady Spartans posted their first victory of the season with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-11) win over the East Jefferson Lady Warriors.
And what made it even more special was the fact that it was Salmen’s first District 5-II game of the season giving them a 1-5 overall record and a 1-0 district record.
East Jefferson falls to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in district action.
The highlight of the first set was the serving of Jourdan Earhart.
With Salmen behind 18-8, Earhart stepped to the service line and proceeded to serve 13 straight winners to take a 21-18 lead going on to win the set 25-21.
Kalani Brown’s play at the net set the tone in the second set as her blocking ability started to pay dividends as the Spartans pounded the Warriors to a 25-11 win.
Earhart went on another serving rampage in the third this time serving 12 straight winners going on to mirror the second set win at 25-11.
“I’m proud of the way the girls played today,” said Earhart. “They played an awesome game and I’m really happy about getting our first win of the season.”
Brown had her typical great game hitting 10 kills, five aces, four digs and six blocks. Breanna Freeman had five digs, three aces and three digs. Earhart had six digs and eight aces while Lyllian Mirelez led the offense with eight assists and one ace.
“Jourdan (Earhart) played well today,” said Spartan coach Kyle Cahill. “I was getting a little nervous in the first set when we were behind 18-8. We were struggling until she went back there and served a bunch of points. We made some changes tonight. We put Jourdan in the Libero slot and made Lyllian (Mirelez) our setter and it really worked well. After we fought through that first set to win I think they could see how much better they can play.”
