SLIDELL—Devin Brumfield continues to show the rest of the teams in District 6-5A that he is going to be a nightmare for years to come.
He’s only a freshman.
Brumfield scored three touchdowns and had 140 yards on 15 carries in a 31-19 win over Slidell last Thursday night.
Covington (3-2, 2-0) remains perfect in District 6-5A heading into their showdown next week on the road at #4 Ponchatoula. Slidell (3-2, 0-2) finishes out a two-game road trip next week against Hammond.
After punting on their first two possessions of the game, Brumfield would take his first carry of the game 82 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
“This game could have gone either way,” Covington Coach Greg Salter said. “ We were just fortunate to come out on top.”
Justin Leger’s capped off an 11-play, 69-yard touchdown drive for Slidell’s first touchdown of the game, cutting the lead to 7-6.
Leger’s second touchdown run of the game, this time from three yards out, gave the Tigers a brief 12-10 lead in the third quarter, but Brumfield would answer with a four-yard touchdown run to put Covington back on top of things at 17-12.
Trailing 24-12 after another Brumfield touchdown, Slidell would not go away without a fight as Wayne Griffin hit Kain Mitchell for a 27-yard touchdown to cut the Lion lead to 24-19.
“We just made too many mistakes,” said Slidell Coach Larry Favre. “This is all part of the growth process we’re going through.”
The Covington defense also proved to be one of the driving forces in the victory, holding Slidell running back Kain Mitchell to a season-low 32 yards on 20 carries. Griffin did have one of his best games under center, throwing for 152 yards on 10-of-20 passes with a touchdown and an interception.
The 79th match-up between the two schools, Covington now holds an all-time series lead of 50-28-1.
