SLIDELL — Regardless of what district and class the Pope John Paul II Lady Jaguars play in they continue to be one of the best, all-around teams in the area.
They proved that again last week when they handed the St. Thomas Aquinas Lady Falcons a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-9) sweep in the opening game of District 3-IV play for the Lady Jags.
Pope John Paul upped their overall record to 24-4 and are now 1-0 in district play St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 11-10 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Jags never trailed in the first set and served the ball well. Bailee Maillet and Camille Dedeaux dominated the Falcons from the service line with deep and hard serves.
The second and third sets were carbon copies of the first with the Jags keeping the Falcons off balance with thundering, deep serves which proved to be too much for STA to handle.
“We played our system well today,” said Lady Jag assistant coach Danny Tullis. “I thought that we did a good job with our serve and receive game. When we didn’t miss, we had an excellent game at the service line. The girls worked hard and it’s always good to get a district win.”
Pope John Paul’s Allison Hartmann led with a team-high 14 kills, one block and three digs while Marlena Cutura finished with 11 kills and three digs. Camille Dedeaux had three digs and four aces while Tyler Sanderson three digs and three aces. Christina Cutura added three digs and Milayne Danna had a team-high 24 assists.
