MT. CARMEL — For Mt. Carmel’s Taylor Berry, it was a night to remember.
For the Slidell Lady Tigers it was a night to forget as the Cubs handed Slidell a thorough thrashing to the tune of 71-10 in Mt. Carmel’s gymnasium.
With the score at 0-0, Barry stepped to the charity stripe and sank what she thought was a routine free throw. But what it turned out to be was her 1,000th career point.
Berry’s 13 total points helped lead the defending Class 5A champions to the lopsided victory over Slidell in their season-opener.
The Cubs shutout the Tigers in the first period while building a 19-0 lead after one with Berry scoring nine of the Cubs’ 19 points.
Slidell was without the services of four of their key players, including last season’s leading scorer Lauren West. West was held out because of a personal matter.
Mount Carmel continued scoring in transition using 20 Tiger turnovers to increase its lead to 39-4 at the half.
The Cubs came out hot in the third quarter, scoring 23 points while holding Slidell to six to increase the lead to 62-10.
Senior guard Jewell Thompson led the Tiger scoring with eight points followed by Jourdan Smith with two points.
